In WSUP, we do lots of different activities together! From our impromptu music recitals (karaoke anyone?) to well-planned table tennis championships – we even have a few Olympic hopefuls here! We also play board games from time to time and organize a bunch of art groups. In summer, we may also do a few BBQs.
At WSUP, we know the best medicine in the world is laughter, and so we prescribe to it in all our drop-in sessions!
WSUP is a grass-roots project that supports those seeking help in the local community. We provide practical and emotional support specifically to service users who are experiencing homelessness, vulnerable housing or are recovering from illness/addiction.
WSUP started off as a government project back in 2010, where we supported service users who are suffering from alcohol and drug addiction then. However, in 2015, the government stopped funding the project due to spending cuts.
With no one to support the service users at the time, they became vulnerable. Mark, one of the staff from the original WSUP was determined to fix this.
With only £200, a white table and the resolve to help the neglected in the community, Mark knocked on different local venues and charities for support. After 6 months, Mark’s perseverance paid off and was heard by Second Floor Studios.
Soon after sorting the venue out, 5 volunteers restarted WSUP, and this marks the beginning of the WSUP that we know of today.
The main difference between the old and new WSUP is we welcome everyone! Driven by our goal to support everyone looking for helping in our communities, we didn’t want to limit our support to just alcohol or drug addiction service users. And so…we decided to open our doors to everyone!
Since our humble beginning, we’ve settled in Woolwich Central Baptist Church, where we’ve been fortunate to grow and be able to help more people.
We’ve built a tight-knit community where we’re always here to help those in need, to support one another and just to have fun
We’re super welcoming, come say hi in our drop-in sessions. We’ll love to meet you!
